Abstract: There are 20 members of the family Engraulidae in Papua New Guniea waters. The distribution of these species is determined by environmental aspects of the various coastal habitats, with the greatest number of species found in the Gulf of Papua.

Abstract: The Papua New Guinea CP.N.G.l domestic pole-and-line skipjack tuna fishery commenced in 1970 and maintained operations more or less continually until 1981. This fishery was closed at the end of 1981 due to economic factors that have been well documented CDoulman and Wright 1982, and Doulman 1983).
