| | Deep bottom fishing project - Report 8: Maiana Kiribati Author(s): Tinga, R., Ueantabo, N. Place: Tarawa (Kiribati) Date: 1991 Notes: In May, 1980 SPC Masterfisherman P. Taumaia, visited the island and conducted for the first time (in collaboration with Fisheries Division) deep bottom fishing activities. His average catch rate was reported to be 10.5kg/reel-hr. In comparision with the 11.6kg/reel-hr obtained from our visit (CPUEs are for all species including sharks), it may well support the assumption that the stocks of deep bottom fishes along the deep reef slopes od Maiana have to date remained untapped as confirmed by the increase in CPUE of 1.1kg/ree-hr over the 1980 figure. This increase further establishes the assumption that that biomass of the virgin stock of this resource may have slightly increased by certain proportions since 1980. | | Deep bottom fishing project, report no. 10: Abaiang, Kiribati Author(s): Tinga, R. Publisher: Kiribati Place: Tarawa (Kiribati) Date: December 1991 Notes: In May, 1984 the Fisheries Division under the supervision of SPC Masterfisherman P. Taumaia, conducted deep bottom fishing operations for the first time along the outer-reef slopes of selected areas at Abaiang. Log sheets reveal that the CPUE was estimated to be 2.8kg/reel-hr. In comparison with the present CPUE of 7.0kg/ree-hr, it is possible that the deep bottom fish resource have a high potential for exploitation. Care should, however, be exercised to maintain a modest level of fishing effort if stocks should not be allowed to decrease, in which case an in-depth analysis should be made to determine the value of maximum sustainable yield for this resource. | | Fishing pressure on the resource of the elongated giant clam, Tridacna maxima, in Tonga (In Fisheries Research Bulletin of Tonga, Volume 3, 1995) Author(s): Kava, V., Udagawa, K., Ikenoue, H. Publisher: Ministry of Fisheries, Tonga Place: Nuku'alofa (Tonga) Date: 1995 Notes: pp. 11-17 ASFA Keywords: Clam fisheries, Fishery statistics, Fishery data, Fishery management Country Collection: Tonga Abstract: The size distribution of T. maxima landed at Vuna Wharf fish market indicated that the stock of T. maxima was subjected to stronger fishing pressure in 1992-94 than in 1979. The stock of clams larger than 100mm SL has decreased to such a low level that the catch of larger clams cannot be increased by intensifying fising effort.

| | Giant clam fishing off Tongatapu Island (In Fisheries Research Bulletin of Tonga, Volume 2, 1994) Author(s): Kava, V., Udagawa, K. Publisher: Ministry of Fisheries, Tonga Place: Nuku'alofa (Tonga) Date: 1994 Notes: pp. 43-46 ASFA Keywords: Clam fisheries, Resource management, Fishery data Country Collection: Tonga Abstract: It has long been said that resource management measures should be introduced to prevent depletion of giant clam resources casued by overfishing (Mckoy, 1980; Munro, 1993). However, scientifically justifiable management measures have not been established yet.

| | Results of the field surveys on giant clam stock in the Tongatapu Island group (In Fisheries Research Bulletin of Tonga, Volume 3, 1995) Author(s): Tu'avao, T., Loto'ahea, T., Udagawa, K., Sone, S. Publisher: Ministry of Fisheries, Tonga Place: Nuku'alofa (Tonga) Date: 1995 Notes: pp. 1-10 ASFA Keywords: Clam fisheries, Surveys, Fishery data, Fisheries development, Stock assessment Country Collection: Tonga Abstract: A series of surveys was conducted on the giant clam stocks in the Tongatapu Island group by the towing, free swimming, transect line and scuba diving methods. The density of T. maxima was high at Ha'atafu and Hakauiki Reef. The giant clam stock seems to have greatly decreased around Hakau Mamao Reef since 1979.

| | Rural fisheries in Kiribati: frame surveys of Abemama, Kuria and north Tarawa Author(s): Marriott, S. P. Publisher: Fisheries Division, Ministry of Natural Resource Development Place: Tarawa (Kiribati) Date: 1984 Notes: Frame surveys of Albemama, Kuira and North Tarawa ASFA Keywords: Fishery surveys, Fishery development, Fishery data Country Collection: Kiribati Abstract: Frame surveys were made of three rural areas - Abemama, Kuria and North Tarawa. The results indicated that the island catches were sufficient to sustain their populations and to provide adequate protein requirements, although individual variations in the probable per capita fish consumption were noted. A discussion of the individual subjects development profiles indicated the probable areas for development. It was noted that the projects already started by the Fisheries Division matched the specific development targets that the surveys indicated were appropriate.
