View the PDF document Deep Bottom fishing project - report 8: Maiana Kiribati
Author(s): Tinga, R., Ueantabo, N.
Date: 1991
Notes: In May, 1980 SPC Masterfisherman P. Taumaia, visited the island and conducted for the first time (in collaboration with Fisheries Division) deep bottom fishing activities. His average catch rate was reported to be 10.5kg/reel-hr. In comparision with the 11.6kg/reel-hr obtained from our visit (CPUEs are for all species including sharks), it may well support the assumption that the stocks of deep bottom fishes along the deep reef slopes od Maiana have to date remained untapped as confirmed by the increase in CPUE of 1.1kg/ree-hr over the 1980 figure. This increase further establishes the assumption that that biomass of the virgin stock of this resource may have slightly increased by certain proportions since 1980.

Notes: In May, 1984 the Fisheries Division under the supervision of SPC Masterfisherman P. Taumaia, conducted deep bottom fishing operations for the first time along the outer-reef slopes of selected areas at Abaiang. Log sheets reveal that the CPUE was estimated to be 2.8kg/reel-hr. In comparison with the present CPUE of 7.0kg/ree-hr, it is possible that the deep bottom fish resource have a high potential for exploitation. Care should, however, be exercised to maintain a modest level of fishing effort if stocks should not be allowed to decrease, in which case an in-depth analysis should be made to determine the value of maximum sustainable yield for this resource.
