| | Deep bottom fishing project - Report 8: Maiana Kiribati Author(s): Tinga, R., Ueantabo, N. Place: Tarawa (Kiribati) Date: 1991 Notes: In May, 1980 SPC Masterfisherman P. Taumaia, visited the island and conducted for the first time (in collaboration with Fisheries Division) deep bottom fishing activities. His average catch rate was reported to be 10.5kg/reel-hr. In comparision with the 11.6kg/reel-hr obtained from our visit (CPUEs are for all species including sharks), it may well support the assumption that the stocks of deep bottom fishes along the deep reef slopes od Maiana have to date remained untapped as confirmed by the increase in CPUE of 1.1kg/ree-hr over the 1980 figure. This increase further establishes the assumption that that biomass of the virgin stock of this resource may have slightly increased by certain proportions since 1980. | | Deep bottom fishing project, report no. 10: Abaiang, Kiribati Author(s): Tinga, R. Publisher: Kiribati Place: Tarawa (Kiribati) Date: December 1991 Notes: In May, 1984 the Fisheries Division under the supervision of SPC Masterfisherman P. Taumaia, conducted deep bottom fishing operations for the first time along the outer-reef slopes of selected areas at Abaiang. Log sheets reveal that the CPUE was estimated to be 2.8kg/reel-hr. In comparison with the present CPUE of 7.0kg/ree-hr, it is possible that the deep bottom fish resource have a high potential for exploitation. Care should, however, be exercised to maintain a modest level of fishing effort if stocks should not be allowed to decrease, in which case an in-depth analysis should be made to determine the value of maximum sustainable yield for this resource. Place: Wewak Date: 1982 Notes: Report no. 82-6 ASFA Keywords: Deep-water fisheries, Handlining, Longlining, Surveys Country Collection: Papua New Guinea Abstract: In January 1982, the Fisheries and Survey Branch commenced a deep-water bottom fishing project. The main objectives of this project are to assess the potential for development of deep-water (80 - 300m) fish as a harvestable resource, and to gain basic biological information on the fish communities living at these depths

| | Deep water prawn programme : a detailed plan of operation Author(s): Brown, I.W Place: Suva (Fiji) Date: 1979 ASFA Keywords: Deep water, Shrimp fisheries, Catching methods Country Collection: Fiji Abstract: The systematics of the local deep-water prawn community is more complex than originally thought. The genus Heterocerpus in particular, appears to include a wide range of morphs which may correspond to separable species or sub-species, although it is possible that there may be a few highly morphologcally variable species

The land area is approximately 22 kilometres with the highest point of 30 metres above sea level. Anibare Bay is located on the windward eastern side of the island. A channel was blasted back in the 80s to allow better access by small skiffs and canoes to the open sea during the westerly bad weather.
